He was born in 1942 and educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. After a 20-year military career, he is now an officer in the naval reserve.
His maternal grandmother was a cousin of Tzar Nicholas II of Russia and he has a particular interest in Russian affairs, serving as patron of the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce. He is a qualified Russian interpreter and also speaks fluent French. It has been remarked on his visits to Russia how much he looks like Tsar Nicholas.
